Collabor is a collaborative world-building game which unfolds on two levels. You should assemble a group of tabletop gamers - any system is fine, and you and your friends will start by creating a Deity in the fictional fantasy world of Theonosis. Your god will grow in power within the fictional world of Theonosis by gaining worshipers. This power is represented by points, and you earn them by adding content to Theonosis. So each member of your group will help fill in any part of the world, which will make your group's god more powerful. One way to do so is to play a tabletop role-playing game, in which each of your players will have a character who worships the god you and your friends mutually role-play. You can game amongst each other, such as by going on quests to gain glory and prestige for your god, while simultaneously competing as a group with other gamers who play collectively as different gods. This means that some of your quests may occur at the same time as those of other gods, and you may even be racing or otherwise interacting with gaming groups from around the (real and fictional) world.

To assign a Province, Region or Setting to the game Collabor, simply place {{Collaborbox}} on the relevant talk pages (you do not need to place the box on any page but the talk pages for the relevant Provinces, Regions or Settings).

Time passes at a rate of 50 years=1 Generation=1 month of real world time. Since it is not practical to play a tabletop RPG with 50 years passing every four weeks, you'll want to set a particular Generation for the area you are going to be playing in. For example, if you start in June at Generation 14, you could continue to play within that 50 year timespan and then in December jump forward to the "present", which would be Generation 20, 300 years later. You are playing a god, so you can make your heroes immortal and continue role-playing them indefinitely.

Background info

Deities are gods and goddesses. In this world, they receive their power from the emotions and higher thinking of mortal creatures. For example, when a person sees a beautiful flower and feels a higher emotion, it creates energy, which Deities can collect from many people and use. Deific energy is characterized by its origin: a person who looks at a rose and is reminded of how he gave a rose to his wife when they married might produce Deific energy of Roses specifically and Flowers in general, as well as Love or perhaps Marriage. So this one act (looking at a rose) powers whichever Gods of Roses, Flowers, Love and Marriage that man worships.

Thus Deities grow in power by increasing the number of people who worship them, the frequency or intensity with which they worship or the number of subjects (called Zones) they associate the Deity with. However, it is important to remember that you as a player of a Deity in a game of Collabor gain power through earning points (see below).

Deities do not have any existence in the world except through their Manifestations. A Manifestation is anything a Deity creates in the world using Deific energy. If it is a person that the Deity creates, this is called an Avatar, and it is generally assumed that Avatars are how Deities most directly interact with the world. If it is a person that already existed and is simply imbued with Deific energy, that person is called a Champion. Deities can also imbue their energy into a physical object (Artifact), a period of time (Holiday) or a location (Temple). In addition, Deities can create Races of mortal creatures, monsters, animals or plants, as well as lay Curses.

How to start?

  1. Find a Setting that is marked for Collabor or go to Theonosis:Geography and list of settings to start a new one. You may want to organize a way for people playing Collabor in that Setting to communicate. It does not have to be on this wiki, for example the theonosis subreddit may provide an easier way to share your work with other players.
  2. Make your Deity. See Theonosis:How do I make a Deity?. You and the other gamers in your group will have to agree on the appearance, nature and demeanor of the god you are going to be playing. However, you will quickly grow in power enough that your god can create other Avatars, who may seem totally different and unrelated to the original. So each gamer can have an Avatar that they prefer, all of which are either secretly or openly the same Deity.
  3. The content that you added gives you your first points, so mark that on your user page (see Theonosis:Collabor#Gaining points).
  4. That's it. Your Deity exists and is growing in power. You can start expanding on this wiki or publishing work of any kind.

Gaining points

There are three ways to earn points:

  • Add original content to Theonosis
  • Publish a creative work, such as a short story or poem, or a picture or recording
  • Run a role-playing game set in the world of Theonosis
Note: We are assuming that the content you create relates to your Deity. It does not have to, however, so feel free to write about anything as long as it is in the Theonosis universe.

Everybody who is participating in Collabor in the Setting you have chosen will need to agree on a way to communicate and share your work, such as through the Theonosis subreddit or on this wiki. This link should show what, exactly, you are taking credit for. For example, if you have added information about your Deity to his page on this website, you should find the diff page in the history.

What is a diff page and how do I find it? This website keeps track of every revision to every page. So when you have contributed to a page, go the tab at the top marked "history". You will see a list of all the edits to the page. The ones at the top are the most recent, so presumably that should be you. If you made all of your contributions in just one edit, click on "prev" on the same row as your edit: this will show you what you changed from the previous edit. You should submit that link. If you made more than one edit, go to the first line that is not your edit and click on cur: this shows the difference between the last edit you didn't make and the current edit, so it will show exactly what you added. If your content exists somewhere else on the web, link to that, but be explicit about what you are claiming credit for. If your content is a published novel or other work, link to a place where it can be acquired.

You should keep track of your points on your userpage on this website. When you submit a link to the subreddit, just edit your userpage and add to the list of points (see below for an example). When you use the points, mark that on your userpage. If you think that a particular piece of content you have created is worth extra points beyond what a superficial examination would reveal, just explain how many extra points you are giving yourself and why. As long as nobody abuses this, there's no need to be strict.

Original content

You may contribute to any page in the main namespace. You may describe any reasonable aspect of the world of Theonosis. For example, you may wish to fill in information about the general area your Deity is worshiped in. This may be formal and encyclopedic, or a first-person narrative, or a primary source (such as an epic poem). It must contribute significantly to the world.

You will get five points for every 100 words of original content. Just make a simple list on your userpage of the original content you have added, like this:

  • Total points earned=260
    • 40 pts for the "Social Role" section of Modrobene
    • 15 pts for the opening paragraph of Deepdark
    • 5 pts for a rewrite of the opening paragraph of Deepdark
    • 200 pts for Modrobalia, which is low on words but took a long time, and its development is ongoing

As you can see, in this case we are giving points for a rewrite. You may also give yourself a bonus for particularly difficult content to create, or for work that is intense and useful but low in words.

As long as no one abuses this system, we don't need to be more specific. There's nothing you could gain from cheating that you couldn't gain from just participating in a different project entirely. You also don't have to prove you are being precise in counting words, just be honest and do the best you can.

Publish a creative work

You may publish any kind of creative work. Publishing need not be commercial. It must be Open Setting-licensed but need not be Creative Commons. You may publish it simply by uploading it to this website, so long as it is a discrete, finished work.

  • Short stories, novels and other literary works are worth 5 points for every 100 words
  • Poems are worth anywhere from 5 to several hundred points, depending on length, complexity, etc.
  • A simple drawing is usually around 100 points. More complex art may be worth as much as a novel.
  • A typical song is around 5,000 points. Longer or more complex pieces may be worth more.

You may simply make a list of your published work and the values have you have assigned. As long as no one abuses this, we can work out standard values as we go.

Run a role-playing game

If you and your gaming group runs a tabletop (or other) role-playing game, you can receive 500 points for an entire 4-7 hour gaming session. You must post a summary of the game's events in an appropriate place on this website, and it must be posted in an intelligible, encyclopedic fashion. You might want to think of it as a literary report of the events surrounding the quest your gaming group is conducting, so it should be interested and contain only the relevant details. You may wait until finishing an entire quest or campaign, and you may give yourself the points for each gaming session. Whatever content your group adds to Theonosis will give you points in addition to the 500 you get from the gaming session - so if you write a 500 word summary as part of the "history" section of the article, you will get 1000 points total (assuming you only played one game session).

Spending points

As you use points, move the items in your list to a "used points" list and list what the points were spent on.

  • Total Points earned=560
    • 40 pts for the "Social Role" section of Modrobene
    • 15 pts for the opening paragraph of Deepdark
    • 5 pts for a rewrite of the opening paragraph of Deepdark
    • 500 points for the Modrobalia (this is increased because it was difficult and time-consuming despite the low word count)
  • Total Points used=315
    • Used to create the Avatar Nelktor
      • 20 points base cost
      • Nelktor costs 100 points for Power A
      • Nelktor costs 100 points for Power B
      • Nelktor costs 95 points for Power C
      • 315 points total
Note: You may devise alternate ways of managing your points as long as outsiders can look at and verify your accuracy.

Costs

Note: In order to "create" a Manifestation in this universe, you must describe it using Original Content of about 100 words (or more) on this website. You may describe its appearance, purpose, history, powers or whatever other notable aspect of it you think is most relevant.

  • When you create a Manifestation it has no special powers. You must spend points to expand on it. The actual creation of a Manifestation costs a base of 20 points.
    • Each power costs at least 1 point.
    • Increasing or decreasing the size, area, length or duration costs 5 points for each increase by one third from the base. You can approximate.
      • Base sizes:
      • Avatar: Ordinary human
      • Temple: 100 sq ft
      • Race: Starts with 10,000 individuals, increase this number by one third for every 5 points
      • Race: Each individual starts human-sized, increase this size by one third for every five points
      • Holidays: 1 hour
      • Champion: Ordinary human
      • Artifact: Small object, approximately the size of a knife or small dagger
      • Curses: Affect 1 family or group, consisting of approximately no more than a 100 people at a time. Note that you can approximate afflicting a larger population by randomly changing the targeted group. (i.e. if 100,000 people believe they are cursed with lightning susceptibility, any increase in the number of people struck by lightning will seem to confirm the curse, even if only a few thousand people are actually afflicted) Also note that Curses are unique among Manifestations in that they do not cost more as they become "smaller" (i.e. afflict fewer people); the reverse is true, so for every 1/3, the Curse costs 5 points less.
      • Remember that these sizes apply only to the part that is officially a Deific Manifestation. A large building can function as a "temple" with only the 100 sq ft altar in the center being the official "Temple".
  • Races
    • To give a Race an innate power, calculate its cost as an ordinary power and multiply by 10. This process applies for non-magical powers as well (e.g. super-strength).
    • Add a disposition towards worshiping a particular god for 100 points. Note that this can only be a *disposition*, or a tendency towards it. You can never guarantee that every member of the species is loyal to you.
  • Products
    • Products are special Manifestations that must be assigned to a separate Manifestation whose primary purpose is in creating or propagating the Product.
    • To give a Product an innate power, calculate its cost as an ordinary power and multiply by 10. This process applies for non-magical powers as well (e.g. super-sharpness).
  • Modifications
    • By default, a Manifestation will be created at the end of the current Generation. By doubling the cost, the Manifestation can be created more quickly, though not within the next year. By tripling the original cost, the Manifestation can be created immediately or within a year.
    • For every additional Generation you wait, you gain an extra 20 points that can be used in this Manifestation.
    • You may also add a flaw or weakness, which is measured simply as an inverse of a power, so the more important the flaw is, the less the Manifestation will cost.

How many points is a power worth?

Note: Be honest and assign the points yourself. These guidelines will become more specific as the game evolves, but don't let worrying about it bog you down. Ultimately there's way too much variation possible to cover every circumstance, so just do your best.

A Manifestation without powers will always appear special, perhaps beautiful or serene, or ugly or fearsome, but will otherwise be ordinary. So if you want your Manifestation to be able to do anything interesting or useful, you will need to spend points.

  • 1 point
    • Something very minor or superficial, like changing the color of a surface or object
    • Slightly altering a person's mood
  • 3 points
    • A very small amount of physical damage, typically 1 point of hit points, depending on which system you use
  • 5 points
    • Creating a small permanent object
    • Healing a small amount of damage in 1 person
  • 10 points
    • Preventing a small amount of damage to 1 person or object
  • 20 points
    • Continually creating something (e.g. a grove of trees that may grow and change continuously) in a 10' area
    • Causing enough damage to kill most ordinary people, but only 1 such person
    • Healing a large amount of damage in 1 person
  • 50 points
    • Causing enough damage to kill 6-8 people in a given small area
    • Immunity to a type of damage for 1 person, place or object
    • Significantly changing a person's mindset for a limited duration
  • 100 points
    • Causing enough damage to kill 30-50 people in a given small area
  • 500 points
    • Reshaping the landscape of a given Province in a small way one time
  • 1000 points
    • Reshaping the landscape of a given Province in a major way one time
  • 2500 points
    • Controlling a person's mind and body forever, one time use
    • Raising a person who has died back to life without becoming undead (i.e. simply reversing death)
  • Note: "One time" powers can only be used once, but the points remain used for as long as the Manifestation exists. If you cancel the Manifestation, the one time power will become undone.

Cancelling or changing a Manifestation

  • You may cancel a Manifestation at any time. Any physical objects or living creature that constitutes the Manifestation will continue to exist, but will lose all abnormal or special properties.
    • It will disappear at the end of the current Manifestation. You may speed this up just like the creation of a Manifestation.
    • You will not get the points back for three Generations.
  • You may not change a Manifestation. You may create a new one on top of the old one. This means that you may effectively change a Manifestation by canceling the extant one and making a new one at the same time. You will have to pay the extra cost of maintaining both Manifestations, or pay extra to cancel the original one early.
